During the 2011 Canada Winter Games Team’s last training camp in Vancouver, meeting Anna Rice, Derrek Ng & Adrian Liu were the highlights. Listening to Anna’s experiences in multi-sport events was truly inspirational. Anna Rice is North America’s top female badminton player. Originally from North Vancouver, Canada, Anna has been playing professional badminton for more than 10 years. At number 29 in the world, Anna is the highest ranked North American singles player and is the reigning Canadian National Champion, as well as the 2009 U.S. Open Champion. She has represented Canada at the International level for over 12 years, including such major events as the 2004 Athens Olympics, the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as several World Championships. Adrian Liu (Prince Rupert) and Derrick Ng (Vancouver) just won the Men’s Doubles title at the 2011 Senior National Championships held two weeks ago at Humber College in Toronto.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Anna became the first female singles player from a Pan American country to achieve a top-16 finish. While continuing with her professional badminton career, Anna strives to use her success on the court to help promote the sport of badminton in North America. Anna played professional badminton in Denmark along with her husband Bobby Milroy, before the two re-settled back in Canada. They both plan to promote the sport to help it grow in North America. Bobby is now the President of ClearOne Sports, which has three badminton centres around Vancouver (see www.clearonebadminton.com for more). As well as being an athlete, Anna is also active in other areas of her sporting community. As an Athlete Ambassador for the non-profit organization called Right To Play, Anna traveled to Uganda last Spring to work with this humanitarian organization.
